The More You Know

I’m a big believer of using technology, and particularly the Internet, as a tool in education.  As a result, I’ve got quite a few go-to websites for different situations.

Here are my favorites!

VocabularySpellingCity.com   This is a bit of a lesser known site, but is great nonetheless.  I really like this site because it can be used to help students not only memorize but understand the vocabulary used in any school subject.  There are lots of games, as well as printable worksheets to help students practice spelling and handwriting.

Exploratorium  This is a great website for older children and teenagers who are interested in science and the world around them.    Exploratorium is essentially a virtual museum, with interactive videos such as a cow’s eye dissection, and hands-on activities like Make Your Own Petroglyph.  I recommend this website for students who learn well visually or through interactive activities.

Starfall.com  Starfall is probably the website that I recommend most to my students.  This website is full of fun games and activities for children learning to read, beginning readers, as well as students who are struggling with reading.  The activities are really helpful from an educator’s viewpoint, but students find them to be fun and engaging, which helps students to develop a positive relationship with reading.

National Geographic for Kids  National Geographic’s site for kids is a good option for younger students who are interested in science and exploring the world around them.  I find this website to be particularly engaging for elementary aged students, as there are plenty of games, videos, and activities.

Education.com I find Education.com to be a great resource for parents who are wishing to become more involved in their child’s education.  There are resources for every age group and every subject, and plenty of activities and worksheets.  This website also has information for parents who are looking to understand what their children are learning and how to help them become successful learners.

Shepherd Software  Shepherd Software has literally hundreds of educational games, in most subjects.  This is a good website for younger students to practice their skills while having fun.
